Sasebo Elementary School was buzzed with excitement as parents, teachers, students and community members gathered for the first-ever Sasebo Universal Pre-Kindergarten Fashion Show.
The UPK Fashion Show marked the culmination of the clothing study and served as a celebration of the students' educational journey. It provided an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge of patterns, colors, textures, and clothing features, while also exploring how to use different materials to create new garments.
“I wanted to create an experience that would ignite students' imaginations, giving them the creative freedom to design something they could truly be proud of,” said Joel Arocho, pre-K teacher at Sasebo Elementary.
The process began with DoDEA’s youngest learners sketching their designs on paper, where their imaginations were first unlocked. A field trip to a local thrift store followed, where students had the chance to "purchase" clothes using play money. Parents were briefed beforehand and were asked to take pictures of their child's designs and assist in selecting clothing that would bring those designs to life. The parents provided incredible support throughout this process.
When the group returned to school, each student took turns sharing their vision for how they wanted their clothes to be transformed. Over the course of several weeks, volunteers worked side-by-side with the students to cut, arrange, design, and sew the pieces into finished garments and guided the students as they brought their creations to life. The results were nothing short of remarkable.
On the day of the fashion show, students strutted down the runway confidently following the practices they had rehearsed while showcasing their incredible designs and creativity. Collaboration with the high school brought additional volunteers who helped bring the event to life.
Sasebo Elementary is incredibly grateful for the support from students, parents, and teachers who cheered on the pre-kindergarten students, and the Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo (CFAS) community and the Sasebo Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (base thrift shop) who inspired, supported, and cheered on the students during the event.
